Rising Healthcare Costs and a New Path Forward

Since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (commonly known as Obamacare), many Americans—particularly working families and small businesses—have experienced steadily rising health insurance premiums. While the law expanded coverage, it also introduced complex subsidy structures, limited competition in insurance markets, and increased administrative costs. In many regions, especially rural areas, consumers were left with fewer plan choices and higher out-of-pocket expenses. As insurance companies consolidated and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) gained more influence, premiums continued to rise while transparency declined, making it difficult for patients to understand what they were paying for—or why.

President Trump’s newly unveiled Great Healthcare Plan aims to address these issues by focusing on affordability, accountability, and transparency. A key pillar of the plan is lowering prescription drug prices by ensuring Americans pay no more than what other developed countries pay for the same medications. The plan also expands access to safe over-the-counter medications, reducing unnecessary doctor visits and empowering consumers to manage costs directly. To lower insurance premiums, the plan redirects taxpayer subsidies away from large insurance companies and instead sends financial support directly to eligible Americans, allowing them to choose plans that best fit their needs while reducing wasteful middle-man costs and PBM kickbacks.

The Great Healthcare Plan also prioritizes transparency and accountability by requiring insurers and providers to clearly post prices, profits, and claim denial rates in plain language. For patients, this means fewer surprises and more control over healthcare decisions. At One Cross Community Health, we support policies that put patients—not systems—at the center of care. Efforts to lower costs, increase transparency, strengthen rural healthcare, and restore accountability align with our mission to deliver high-quality, whole-person care to the communities we serve.
